"You know, even after all these years and so many kids, it still amazes me that this whole thing doesn't get around somehow. Children are supposed to be lousy at keeping secrets, aren't they? Boy, I know I was... Gus, haven't you ever wondered about what really goes on inside a school bus after all the other kids have been let off at their stops and just one rider remains? Do you think the bus driver just drives that last kid home like she did all the others? Well I'll tell you - she doesn't." Ten year old Gus is about to learn that a wondrous, unimaginable adventure awaits the children whose bus stops are last on their school bus routes. Unfortunately, Gus becomes this last kid at the close of the school year... with only two days of classes - and bus rides - to go. Making matters worse, Gus is moving out of state over summer break and will be losing his fantastic, newly gained, last-rider privileges... forever. This chance of a lifetime will present the boy with some difficult choices. Will he fulfill his own greatest fantasies? Or try and make someone else’s dreams come true? In the course of just a couple days Gus’s heart (and guts) will be tested in ways he never could have imagined. He will discover that you sometimes have to defy the system - and break its rules. He will discover, too, that, contrary to the message conveyed in so many fairytales, just believing - all by itself - is not enough to win the day. Action is required.
